Germany's basketball students failed in the Olympic Quarter Finals at the overpowering European Champion Slovenia around NBA-Superstar Luka Doncic. Through the 70:94 (37:44) On Tuesday in Saitama, the team of national coach Henrik Rödl missed the first qualification for a semi-final at summer games. While the Slovenians fight against France or Italy on Thursday against France or Italy, the average good summer with a small disappointment ended for the selection of DBB. Best thrower was Maodo Lo with eleven points. Doncic came to 20 meters and shone with eleven templates as ball distributor.
The Slovenians unbeaten in the group stage started strongly and presented the German team through their complete defense against great problems. In the offensive, however, the 22-year-old Doncic did not mean in the game as last. Against Argentina, the Guard, who has taken over the leadership of Dirk Nowitzki's leadership of Dallas Mavericks and is currently one of the best players in the world, still alone for 48 points. Now he made only three of his ten throws and recorded six counters until halftime.
Dragic jumps into the breach
However, the Slovenians bothered little because other players like Zoran Dragic responded and quickly provide a comfortable leadership. In the second quarter, the Germans came better in the encounter and went into guidance after three successful threnes of Maodo Lo within 78 seconds (32:31). When it did not work out of the distance and lacked playing solutions, the Slovenians rose slightly more clearly until the break.
The DBB selection stood in front of empty ranks in the Saitama Super Arena first for the third time at all in the round of the best eight at Olympia. In 1984 in Los Angeles there was the from host USA, eight years later in Barcelona, the Community of Independent States (CIS) was too large. In Japan, a victory in the preliminary round against Nigeria was enough to qualify as one of the two best group forms for the K. O. phase. The other two encounters against Italy and the medal candidates Australia went lost.
It gets harder - and the Slovenes even stronger
Against Slovenia it became more heated in the second half. Lo wore a bleeding wound of it, Doncic got an elbow on the other side and discussed several times with the referees over supposedly contentious situations. The favorite European champion defended a lead of around ten points without wasting too many forces.
Until the final phase never came to the feeling that Germany could again be dangerously close. Instead, the Slovenians played their extra class - and caused a significant defeat of the German selection in the end.
