Rudolf Walter Richard Hess (Heß in German; 26 April 1894-- 17 August 1987) was a German politician as well as a leading participant of the Nazi Party in Nazi Germany. Selected Deputy Führer to Adolf Hitler in 1933, Hess served in that placement until 1941, when he flew solo to Scotland in an effort to work out tranquility with the United Kingdom during World War II. He was taken prisoner and also eventually convicted of crimes versus peace, offering a life sentence till his suicide in 1987. Hess enlisted as an infantryman in the Imperial German Military at the outbreak of World war. He was wounded numerous times over the course of the war as well as was granted the Iron Cross, 2nd Class, in 1915.
